View Full Version : Questions about raising mage DPS

Hi everyone, I'm Hiberna, I play a Human Mage on Nazjatar US. My server is about the lowest of the low when it comes to PvE progression. I'm wondering what I can do to raise my DPS. My current spec is Torment/Living Bomb, 18/53/0, I switched just yesterday to this spec from the FrostFire Bolt spec. I only pulled 5kDPS in Frostfire, occasionally a little higher (5.3k). Will my new spec just be higher and is there a different rotation, other then just replacing FFB with FB? I would like to know what I have to do to increase my DPS to top the my guilds DPS and beyond. My frostfire bolt rotation was flawless, as is my Torment/LB, but I'm still not pulling the DPS. Can you please educate me on this subject.
Here is a link to myself in the US Armory so you can see my gear. I aware I am missing a few pieces such as The Illustration of the Dragon Soul, Cincture of Polarity, Surplus Limb, and The Turning Tide. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-shee ... &n=Hiberna (http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Nazjatar&n=Hiberna)

I am frostfire 0/53/18.Theory says that fireball mage have a bit better DPS this is right yes,but sometimes you have mana problems well depends with who you raiding ofc. :).Both builds are equal another one just replace frostfire ball with fireball.Rotation is same.If you think to stay frostfire you dont need so much hit rating when you raid if you have draenei in your grp, spriest + you have frost tree talent - Precision you becoming hit capped on 260-280 self hit.Better replace Dying Curse with Emrase of The Spider trinket. With fireball build its good to have more than this becouse you lose 3% from Precision Frost Tree talent.
Both builds are top raiding at moment its fully your decision what you like and with what main spell to play.
PS: If you stay with Dying Curse trinket replace both Orange gems 9sp/8hit with 9sp/8crit.And change your meta gem with 21crit/3% increased crit. You will need 2 blue gems for this i suggest to put 2x 9sp/12stam or 9sp/3mp5 somewhere in blue slot or yellow till you dont get malygos25 man quest reward + Pennant Cloak from OS+2drakes.

Thanks for the post back, though this wasn't exactly what I was looking for, it does help. I'm really looking for how I can get a significant DPS increase. I'm not 100% sure what kind of DPS other skilled Mages pull, but I would imagine its higher then mine.

Personally i would change herbalism to either JC or Tailoring because thats an extra ~75 SP gained. Drop hit until you reach 13% or 341 rating (you should have the raid shuffled with a draenei in every party) and put all the extra stats possible into SP. Then step back and take a look at your gems and rework them entirely. Socket bonuses arent always bonuses ;)
Beyond that 18/53 spec and LB/FB/MA Majors, keeping an eye on Hot Streak procs and you should be flying. Practice your cooldown timings on fights to get the most out of them where possible (pots/trinkets during heroism or at key points in fights) as well as finding out a good mana rotation for evo/gem

your hitrating is just fine for TTW - fire specc.
Spell Hit Rating : there are two percentages you must know here. While fighting adversaries of your level (mobs or players, PvP) you need 4% hit (104.93 spell hit rating). While fighting bosses (those are considered +3 levels) you need 17% hit (445.94 spell hit rating). Depending on if you choose to go for Frostfire or Fireball build, you will need either 11% (288.55 spell hit rating) with the Elemental Precision talent or 14% (367.25 spell hit rating) without. Note this is for raid environment when you have a boomkin or shadowpriest applying his 3% hit debuff on your target. Spell Hit MUST be capped and not doing so will result in a great DPS loss.
I would suggest to put other gems in your sockets like only 19spellpower ones. Make sure you stay hitcapped tho :)
Also consider levelling Jewelcrafting as it gets you 3 32spellpower gems which is very nice to have.
and ALWAYS keep living bomb up, this is a must :)
