I'm in an argument with my RL over using resist auras on Thorim, I'm for running auras on hard mode even if they might be a dps loss for a class, he says paws is good enough and let's the classes run whatever they wish to boost dps. I don't know I guess the question is it worth reducing damage to help people survive a bit longer ot just go for the burn on him?

I had researched resists and from what I can tell for wotlk they offer an average reduction based on how high you go with them. We can't stack the raid at all times to cover everything we need so sometimes one or the other has to give, lower damage or more dps.

If you look at the situation at hand, on Thorim, you're basically comparing one hunter losing 300 rap vs the raid taking significantly less damage. In my humble opinion, the rather small dps loss of 1 raid member doesn't weigh up to the damage reduction your raid will receive. Not only that, it will give your healers more time/mana to focus on the tanks, who are taking pretty bursty damage.
