View Full Version : Protec - Holy paladin issue
Hey Protec & rest of Method. Good job giving Ensidia some competition!
Anyway,
Protec;
I've played a holy paladin since early beta in '04. Know the class/spec inside out, but just checked your armory, and noticed you have 30k mana unbuffed.. which is 3k more than what I have in my intellect gear (JC trinket + Pandora's Plea + some off pieces)
My question is; With around 33.5k mana raid buffed (using flask of distilled wisdom) I never end up going out of mana, so i am wondering why you have gone to these extremes - is it because int benefits us the most overall or just because big mana pools are nice to look at? :)
Wondering if haste would not be a better choice when having that much mana? For throughput.
I know spellpower wouldn't be a choice as 90% of it is overhealing. And crit is decent, but then again, the more you get, the less valuable it gets.
Just want to know your thoughts on this.

Not gonna take over your question to Protec ofcause. But a few tips that'll hopefully keep your mana up.
All depending on the fight, you can always use Divine Plea. If that is a choice, you should ofcause always have a stop buff/aura macro for it. Incase high hits on the tank/ raid/whatever you heal is going in.
Stacking haste has never been worthfull, but taking it over MP5 have always been the case for paladins throught out Wrath. But even with high amounts of haste, with such a mana pool, I dont see you running oom of you're using the right rotation of spells.
If you're assigned to heal a tank, dont go spamming him with Holy Light 24/7. Have addons for boss swing timer and cast timer, with those use your spell equaly to that. As most other paladins you're probably assigned to a tank, since we're the best none-stop casting healer in game. (fuck you disc priests). Make sure you always have Light's Grace up (lesser casting time on Holy Light). Other then that high amount of crit is always worthful, but dont go gemming it unless you go full out on it: 45%.
Personally, unless its at the end of a fight, I've never experienced going out of mana when it was needed. Remember to use your Flash of Light and Holy Shock, and dont go spamming a tank with Holy Light. That should keep your mana to a nice level. If thats not the case, using Divine Plea with a stop aura macro is always a help. Specially since it stacks with manximum mana (gemming intellect ftw)
Hope it helps you

The point is, I don't go OOM. Ever. Tried most hardmodes as well - Only boss I found myself a bit low on mana on, was Steelbreaker last when we brought a healer less (solo-healing Steelbreaker tank)
Just want to know why he is still stacking intellect when he can theoretically never go OOM.

To use Holy Light and Holy Shock as much as possible.
I've been healing Steelbreaker tank too, and thats is a matter of timing.
Always have your Holy Light Landing right after Fusion Punch, make sure to learn the time of the fight so you make the use of your Cooldown most efficient. Using Divine Plea is doable in the fight, if you use Avenging Wrath at the same time, and only cast Holy Lights etc. The reason for getting as much int as possible is that you minimize the amounts of FoL. Which is pretty much a shit heal :)

I cant answer your question. This game and every boss in it are so piss easy that it doesnt matter if some1 wears T7 for the ultimate boni or T8 for better heal assist. It doesnt matter what you gem as long as you keep in your mind that if shit happens (e.g. other healer dies or going oom) that you could save the day by sacraficing more of your own mana for his job. If you r the person to go oom at that point then youve done something very wrong.
Minimze the usage of DP through better gear / int gemming / using everything you can to prevent to rely / using DP. Use the Autoattack when judging a boss to regain mana (which is also influenced by int). If you have 200 or 300 SP less than another paladin doesnt matter since blizzard isnt making a bossfight so hard that you wont be able to heal it with 300 less sp.
I rly feared algalon when i first saw his insane hits on the tank even in 10m. But when we tried him and instantly kicked his ass i was so fucking angry for blizzard to creating such a piss easy boss in terms of healing (ofc you outgear 10m with 25gear). In 25 its a bit harder but nothing special. So my only positive effect of having so much mana is just for my healing endurance and to help out when needed without loosing any capability to get my own job done.
Steelbreaker is the only and easiest fight where you can easily time your heals and you never need to use DP. You can always meele hit him in between his strikes or in the first 2 seconds of his cast and sitll be able to perfectly land a heal on impact (+dispell) without him getting another tick of the debuff.
Regarding fol, forget that spell its just something you have but rarely use. HL is safer, only a bit slower, heals 5 addition targets in 8y range and you help the other healers more by casting a HL with overheal instead of a flash. The only boss where i rly depend on flash/holyshock is when i heal @ freya the NF+roots targets which is a pretty easy job when you take the right decision with your current template of fast healing or damage avoiding techniques.
And even with very good gear, a very high mana pool, timed cooldowns, pot usage and maybe rune usage you can still go oom if you want to or when you heal reckless. Every raid every encounter is a competition for me i try to get my job done and try to assist as best as possible. I am not one of those "oh shit i can only heal my target and please assist me when i use DP" palas.
And btw this full int gear on armory (e.g. greatness instead of my soul of the dead) is just for show. Gear is changed encounter specific.

Hey Protec, what is your crit on your other spec since having a DS on other talent you had jw, I notice your getting more haste so i guess you went for Intell > Haste > crit > sp? ;x I might be pretty wrong on that one lol I know it Intell /crit > haste > sp -_- I was just curious ;x
