    Default MoP Windwalker Monk Guide

    Table of Contents

Welcome to the Windwaker Monk guide, in this guide i will cover everything you need to know and how to master your monk.

The monk has two resources energy and chi, with the former being used to generate the later.

    Energy

Energy is a regenerating resources that regens at a rate of 10 energy per second. Energy regen is affected by haste including buffs like heroism/bloodlust.

The following spells require energy to cast:

Jab: Costs 40 Energy, Basic attack generating 2 chi per use
Expel Harm: Costs 40 Energy, A self heal that generates 2 chi that also damages the closest enemy for 50% of the damage healed.
Spining Crane Kick: Costs 40 Energy, The monks aoe this move generates 1 chi aslong as 3 enemys are hit.
Crackling Jade Lightning: Costs 20 Enery per second, A channeled spell that has a 25% chance to generate 1 Chi.
Grapple Weapon: Costs 40 Energy, You disarm your target for 10seconds which also increases your damage/healing or damage taken reduced by 5% if a better main-hand weapon is stolen.
Disable: Costs 15 Energy, You snare your enemy reducing their movement speed by 50% this spell can be cast again to root the target if they are already affected by Disable.
Spear Hand Strike: Costs 30 energy, You interrupt your target preveneting their cast and any spell in that school from being cast for 5 seconds, also silences the target for 4seconds if the target is facing you.

    Chi

Chi is used on major spells to inflict damage. Unlike rogues combo point system Chi is stacked on the Monk not the enemy target.

The following spells use Chi when cast:

Tiger Palm: Requires 1 Chi, a low cost move with no cooldown, it is used to stack the buff Tiger Power which ignores 10% armor and stacks 3 Times for 30% total armor reduction.
Blackout Kick: Requires 2 Chi, Blackout Kick is the "filler" spell that is used when you have 3 stacks of Tiger Power and Fists of Fury are on cooldown. Blackout Kick applys a 4 second dot that deals 20% extra damage when striking from behind or using the glyph
Rising Sun Kick: Requires 2 Chi, Rising Sun Kick is a high dps ability with an 8second cooldown, it increases damage taken by 10% for 15seconds.
Fists of Fury: Requires 3 Chi, Fist of Fury is the highest damage ability a monk has available, it is a 4 second channeled spell.

    Cooldowns

Energizing brew:Regens 10 energy per second for 10 seconds
Fortifying Brew: A shield wall and last stand rolled in to one granting 20% damage reduction and 20% health increase.
Zen Meditation: Channeled Spell which reduces damage taken by 90% and misdirects 5 harmful spells. Fades on reciving a melee attack.
Touch of Death: Requires 3 Chi, Touch of Death instantly kills the target it requires the target to have equal or less health than you.
Touch of Karma: Requires 2 Chi, All damage taken is reflect back to your target over 6 seconds for your maximum health.
Detox: Costs 20 Energy, Removes all harmful Poison and Disease effects with an 8 second cooldown.

    Combo Breaker

Combo Breaker is the mastery for monks. Each Jab has a chance to generate a free Tiger Palm and/or Blackout Kick.

Alot of the monk talents comedown to personal choice with an exception with maybe 2 of the tiers.

Tier 1: Our movement Tier. Personal Choice - Tiger's Lust. Having a sprint which is castable on anyone in the raid triumphs an extra Roll or movespeed after rolling.

Celerity: Grants an extra charge of roll and reduces the cooldown by 5 seconds.
Tiger's Lust: An on use 70% sprint for 6seconds also removes all immobilizing and movement imparing effects. Has a 1chi cost.
Momentum: Casting Roll or Chi Torpedo grants you 25% movement speed for 10seconds stacking twice.

Tier 2: Our healing Tier. Personal Choice - Chi Wave. A weak tier in my opinion.

Chi Wave: A bouncing heal that hits 7 targers within 20 yards also does weak damage to the boss.
Zen Sphere: A hot that is targetable on allies also does weak damage to the nearest enemy.
Chi Burst: You hurl a ball of chi at the enemy healing all targets inbetween.

Tier 3: Our Chi building Tier. Personal Choice - Power Strikes. The best Chi regen.

Power Strikes: Jab generates an extra Chi every 20seconds. Generates more Chi over a fight than the other talents.
Ascension: Increases maximum Chi by 1. There is no fight where pooling 5 chi is better than the other talents.
Chi Brew: Restores all of your Chi. This is a nice talent for fights where the only thing that matters is the damage during a burst phase.

Tier 4 : Our CC Tier. Personal Choice - Leg Sweep. An AoE 5second stun.

Deadly Reach: Increases the range of Paralysis to 20yards. The pvp choice for locking out healers whilst keeping pressure on your target.
Charging Ox Wave: A shockwave type ability stunning all targets 30 yards in front of you for 3seconds.
Leg Sweep: Knockdown all enemys within 5yards for 5seconds.

Tier 5: Our Survivability Tier. Personal Choice - Dampen Harm. The strongest cooldown in PvE.

Healing Elixirs: You heal for 10% whenever you drink from a Brew or Tea. This is weak because windwalker monks let Tigereye Brew stack to 10 before using it.
Dampen Harm: The next 3 attacks that hit for more than 10% health are reduced in half. This is stronger than our shield wall when large attacks can be predicted.
Diffuse Magic: All spell damage taken is reduced by 90% and exsisting magic effects are reverted back to the caster. A great pvp talent.

Tier 6: Our Damage Tier. Personal Choice - Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger. The best single target.

Rushing Jade Wind: Deals light damage and increases damage taken by Spinning Crane Kick by 30%. Nice for fights that focus on AoE.
Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger: Summons Xuen for 45seconds, Xuen attacks your primary target and has a cleave on a 6seconds cooldown.
Chi Torpedo: Chi Torpedo replaces roll, it deals damage to enemys hit and heals allies.

This screenshot show's the glyphs i intend to use however Rising Sun Kick is shown in the minor's because Blackout Kick isnt on the beta at the moment.

Major All of these glyphs can be changed for personal preference.
Glyph of Touch of Karma - Increases range to 20yard.
Glyph of Touch of Death - Removes the chi cost but increases cooldown by 2mins. The only damage increasing glyph on a standard fight.
Glyph of Spinning Crane Kick - Allows you to move at normal speed whilst channeling.

    Minor
Glyph of Blackout Kick - Grants the 20% dot from any position removes the healing effect. This is a must have for PvE.
Glyph of Zen Flight - Allows you to summon a zen cloud to fly. This has no cast time.
Glyph of Spirit Roll - Allows you to cast roll whilst dead. Nice for corpse runs.

Windwalker Monks are a priority class and we do not have a set rotation, that being said the priority for single target is as follows.

    1. Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger.
    2. Energizing Brew When less than 40 Energy.
    3. Rising Sun Kick for 10% damage debuff.
    4. Tiger Palm to stack or refresh the 30% armor reduction buff.
    5. Tigereye Brew at 10 stacks.
    6. Fists of Fury.
    7. Rising Sun Kick.
    8. Use Combo Breaker Procs.
    9. Blackout Kick if Chi capped.
    10. Jab if energy is capping.
    11. Blackout Kick.
    12. Jab.
    13. Flying Serpent Kick.

Hit + Expertise cap > Haste > Crit > Mastery

2550 hit is required for 7.5%
2550 expertise is required for 7.5%

    Metagem: Agile Primal Diamond.
    Red: Delicate Primordial Ruby.
    Yellow: Perfect Deft Tiger Opal.
    Blue: Glinting Imperial Amethyst.

When reforging your going to want to reforge as much mastery into hit and exp then reforge back from hit and exp to get more haste and crit with haste prioritized making sure you keep the cap of 7.5% on both hit and exp.

The best Professions are going to be Leatherworking for the 320 Agility provided by Fur Lining - Agility and Blacksmithing providing 2 extra sockets.

There are only one choice per type of consumable.
Food: Sea Mist Rice Noodles 300 Agility.
Flask: Flask of Spring Blossoms 1000 Agility.
    Potion: Virmen's Bite 4000 Agility for 25seconds.

Im only using two macro's at the moment that are a dps increase and they are,

    Code:
    #showtooltip Touch of Karma
    /cast Fortifying Brew
    /cast Touch of Karma
    Code:
    #showtooltip Touch of Death
    /cast Fortifying Brew
    /cast Touch of Death
The first is nice on fights with alot of AoE damage going out as you will want to use Touch of Karma on CD i tend to rotate it between a warrior's rallying cry and Fortifying Brew to ensure maximum damage output.

The Second macro is used on fights where there was no aoe and Touch of Karma wasn't used it's quite hard to get a Touch of Death off even with the 20% increased health as a boss tends to drop quite fast in the last 500k however its still more damage output than without Fortifying brew

Hello, and thanks for the great guide :)

However, I was wondering if using Spinning Fire Blossom was worth it or not. The reason I'm asking this, is because with the Chi cost of 1, it hits even more than Blackout Kick when you disregard the 20% dot counterpart (possibly because its Fire damage instead of Physical). So when the dot is already active on the target, would it be better to use a Spinning Fire Blossom instead? Or do we simply not have the extra global cooldown anyways? Granted, I'm still level 54, and I don't know how exactly Spinning Fire Blossom scales in comparison to Blackout Kick, but I just wanted to ask.

    Thanks in advance,
    Bonepaw

it doesnt scale well also the dot from Blackout Kick is like Ignite and will roll over so a blackout kick for 100k will leave a dot for 20k doing another blackout kick for 100k will leave a dot that does 40k damage in total

Yeah sorry for that I just leveled to 60 and realized it doesn't scale at all from Weapon Damage and only from AP. Disregard my comment please, and thanks again for the great guide :)

    Hey,

thanks for a good, well written guide. I got a few questions though and I do hope you will excuse my ignorance of these are obvious things.

1; Why do you macro Fortifying Brew with Touch of Karma? Are you assuming you will be taking that high amount of damage for more then 6 seconds?

2; How come everyone that makes a BiS list for WW monks always state dual wielding is the best option? I must admit I have not done extensive research on the topic, but a quick glance would give the impression that the haste from using 2 handed weapons would out weight the extra damage dealt by the 40% damage buff to the 2 x weaker weapons or is weapon damage more important then haste? Ka'eng, Breath of the Shadow with the 40% damage buff from dual wielding give 142.2 weapon damage more then Inscribed Tiger Staff for the record.

1; Fortifying Brew increase health by 20%, while Touch of Karma does damage up to your max hp so the more hp you have the more damage touch of karma can do.

2: DW pulls ahead because of the increased procs of Tiger Strikes, also weapon damage is the biggest form of DPS increase you will see and the 40% buff makes it top over 2h

Thanks for explaining it, I was figuring there was something there I hadn't thought about. Time to rethink my keybindings then to fit Touch of Karma on it's own instead as I modifier.

Hey, this is a brilliant guide, and I'd first of all like to thank you for that as I may think about levelling my monk seriously for raid comps as and when needed. I have a question though is there an add-on like Power Auras or Tell Me When that you can configure to track the amount of tiger power you have and it's duration as at the moment I'm struggling to keep checking the standard Buff bar. I know this is probably because I'm not fully used to the class. But I think this would really help.

Many Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom :)

im using SatrinaBuffFrame this addon allow's you to create additional buff bars and lets you configure them to track any buff/debuff you need just like "Tell Me When" and "Power Aura's" i will upload my a screenshot of my UI so u can see what i mean.

im asking myself what the haste cap is where crit is getting better. if i think right crit gets better at that " haste point" when you regg more energy than you can waste during bloodlust is aktive. do you know what this cap is ? or how can i calculate it ?
